Bolognesi costruisce un suo mondo a parte, si chiama B.O.M.A.R. UNIVERSE come sintesi del suo nome, e non è un caso o un eccesso di narcisismo. Lui crede veramente che lo “spazio interno” quella parte di universo che costituisce il nostro paesaggio interiore, abbia o trovi occasioni per traboccare e costruire un mondo esterno, globale, in cui il dentro e il fuori sono la stessa cosa. Marco Bolognesi sembra aderire ad un’ estetica cyber punk, è amico di Bruce Sterling, ma ha anche lavorato con Vivienne Westwood a Londra. Sa che la pelle è importante. E’ tutto una questione di gestire le apparenze, molteplici, che vogliamo indossare. Finiamo per essere quello che vediamo e di adeguarci a come siamo visti. Tutto normale.
E’ un artista visivo, completamente visivo, le storie che racconta sono approcci per similitudine, assonanze, consonanze, riverberi e distorsioni. Appartiene mentalmente allo stream nato dalla mostra “Post Human” del 1991 di Jeffrey Deitch. Il suo lavoro fotografico, installativo o cinematografico parte e ritorna sempre al tema della pelle e del corpo. Probabilmente ci sono anche vicende personali che hanno determinato questa sua visione del mondo, ma la sua è soprattutto una scelta culturale. Saldare il passato al futuro, la carne ai transistor: in mezzo c’è sempre e soltanto il corpo. Questo può essere quello delle modelle nudo o modificato dalla tecnologia, c’è del sesso nascosto in ogni angolo del suo lavoro, c’è il bondage che attrae ma anche l’odore del cuio è visibile e percepibile. Un suo film del 2008 si chiama “Black Hole” e se il buco nero fosse De Sade, se il destino dell’uomo è alla fine quello di soffrire e godere nello stesso tempo?
Ma lui costruisce. In “Humanescape” del 2012 la serie di fotografie sono esattamente questo: un corpo nudo in un paesaggio infantile fatto di piccoli pupazzi e di strutture da meccano. Un gioco. Qualcosa che si può fare con le mani. E la stessa arte fotografica di Marco Bolognesi non ha simpatia per le miscele digitali. Preferisce lavorare con i set, con il trucco, con quella dimensione di una tecnologia che non è una scorciatoia ma sa ancora di sudore e fatica. Ancora il corpo, quindi, ma anche la messa in posa, il lungo operare per costruire un’immagine finale che solo il cinema rende apparentemente facile.
Bolognesi in questo ha ancora dentro quello stile di professionalità artigianale alla John Carpenter, il mitico regista di “Distretto 13” e di “Dark Star” oltre naturalmente di “1997: fuga da New York”. Proprio da “Dark star” l’artista ha preso il titolo per una mostra del 2009 a Parma, curata da Elena Forin, in cui veniva presentato il progetto Genesis: 12 light box e una colonna/ totem dentro la quale fluttuano volti tridimensionali di una nuova razza umana ibridata con le macchine. Ma il futuro per Bolognesi è intriso di primitivismo, di cultura pop, di derive fumettistiche oltre che di mille link alla cultura punk. In effetti, il suo interesse è centrato sul concetto di mutazione, sulla logica e la casualità delle trasformazioni che mettono in dubbio la biologia del cambiamento fisico e l’apertura a universi paralleli. Il corpo, quindi, ma anche le sue interazioni con gli universi del fetish, del cyborg, dell’immaginario cinematografico di Cronenberg e Burton o letterario che va da Phil K. Dick all’indimenticabile James G. Ballard di “Crash”. L’universo creato da Marco Bolognesi possiede tante sfumature, la stessa attenzione per la donna e il suo volto, deriva dalla sua attenzione per il cambiamento, il trucco, il cambiare personalità con un colore dei capelli o una linea attorno agli occhi. Il fascino verso il glamour deriva da questa sensibilità. Il resto sta proprio nell’evoluzione di una cultura narrativa di anticipazione in cui l’immagine dell’uomo e della macchina si fondono in un ibrido fluttuante, modificabile dalle circostanze e dalla tecnologia. Come in “Negromante” d William Gibson, il confine tra computer e l’uomo non sta più nelle terminazioni nervose ma nella memoria di un’altra epoca e di un altro corpo.
La cultura artistica e letteraria di Bolognesi, da anni residente a Londra, deriva dai personaggi e intellettuali che negli anni Ottanta e Novanta hanno annunciato un mondo nuovo, probabilmente non migliore di questo, ma forse meno monotono.
Marco Bolognesi
Bolognesi was born in 1974 in Bologna, Italy into a family of artists. His youth was spent in an artistic environment, and he went on to attend the School of Drama, Arts and Music at the University of Bologna.
At the age of 20, Bolognesi illustrated a selection of works by the poet Roberto Roversi, and in the following year he collaborated with the graphic artist Guido Crepax on one of his comic strips. In 1994 he shot his first short film, ‘Giustizia e Verità’ (Justice and Truth) about the victims of terrorism, which was then shown at theVenice Biennale. In this experimental documentary, images and music were deeply interwoven, as they were in his second short film on the same theme, ‘il Partito del Silenzio’ (The Silent Party), made in 1996. Subsequently both films were presented in Rome by the Academy Award-winning composer Ennio Morricone. The film was also shown internationally at many Italian cultural institutes.
Bolognesi then focused on cinema, working as a director’s assistant for Daniele Luchetti, among other directors. His interest then shifted to the medium of photography. Bolognesi’s first project was with Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo.
In 2002, Bolognesi moved to London where he won the artist in residence award at the Italian cultural institute, and undertook his first major photographic project. The outcome was Woodland, a series of stills in collaboration with fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Kei Kagami and Dolce and Gabbana. These studio images combined tribal art, fetish, punk culture and glamorous fashion, using collage techniques to synthesize natural and artificial elements into an imagined breed of beautiful, yet powerful, hybrid women.
In 2006, Bolognesi presented his photographic work Woodland at the Trafalgar hotel in London, which culminated in the photographic series Synteborg in 2007. In the spring of 2008, Bolognesi made the short film Black Hole on the theme of hybrids and cyborgs. In summer 2008, one of his stills was internationally shown as part of the ‘collezione farnesina experimenta’, a touring exhibition of Italy’s most influential artists. 2008 saw the international release of Dark Star, Bolognesi’s second photographic publication, which was based on the 1974 film by Peter Greenaway which includes a selection of his photographic works accompanied by a sci-fi short and additional text.Recent works
In 2009, Einaudi will present a collaborative and experimental art/comics/fiction book by Bolognesi and Carlo Lucarelli. Also in 2009, Bolognesi exhibited some installation work at the Fondazione Solares in Parma, Italy.

Marco Bolognesi
Born in Bologna in 1974, Marco Bolognesi now lives and works in London. His studio is located in Bow in East London.
Marco Bolognesi is a multimedia artist with experience encompassing drawing, painting, cinema, photography and video. His influences include religious iconography, science fiction, street art, avant-garde manifestos and pop icons.
Bolognesi’s artistic identity is a multi-faceted one. After spending his childhood in an artistic environment and attending DAMS, the school of drama, arts and music in Italy, where he thrived upon a diverse means of expression, he chose for his final thesis to analyse works by the artist and filmmaker Peter Greenaway. In 1994 still in Italy, Bolognesi went on to illustrate a selection of works by the poet Roberto Roversi and the following year he collaborated with the graphic artist Guido Crepax on a comic strip. In 1994 also he shot his first short film, ‘Giustizia e Verità’, on the victims of terrorism, which was subsequently screened at the Venice Biennale. In this experimental documentary, images and music are deeply interwoven, as they are in his second short film on the same theme ‘Il Partito del Silenzio’, which was made in 1996. His overall editing method was so particular and his style so original, that both films were presented in Rome by the Academy Award winning composer Ennio Morricone, and then toured internationally around the Italian Cultural Institutes. Cinema subsequently became Bolognesi’s focus and he soon started working as a director’s assistant for some well known directors, including the controversial Nanni Moretti. Although during this period his fascination with the moving image remained, he decided to explore the potential of still images and the photographic medium.
Bolognesi’s first project as a photographer was working with the theatre playwright and literature Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo. In 2002 he moved to London, where he won the Artist in Residence Award at The Italian Cultural Institute, and undertook his first major photographic project Woodland. Woodland was a cycle of stills in collaboration with fashion designers such asVivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Kei Kagami and Dolce & Gabbana. These studio images radically blurred the line between tribal art, fetish, punk culture and fashion, using collage techniques to synthesise natural and artificial elements into an imagined breed of hybrid women. In 2006, Woodland was successfully presented in show at the Trafalgar Hotel in London and culminated in the photographic series ‘Synteborg’ in 2007.
In 2008, Bolognesi made the short film Black Hole around the theme of hybrids and cyborgs. This allowed him to further breathe life into his retro-futuristic creations and realise his fantasy vision of a world in which they exist. Since then, his photographic work has been exhibited internationally. As of Summer 2008, one of his stills is being internationally shown as part of the Collezione Farnesina Experimenta, a touring exhibition.
In addition to this, 2008 has seen the International release of DarkStar, Bolognesi’s second photographic publication. DarkStar includes a selection of his photographic works accompanied by a sci-fi short story and essays from a diverse range of journalists and critics.
In February 2009, Bolognesi exhibited some installation work at theFondazione Solares in Parma, in the exhibition Genesis. During this exhibition his film Dark Star was also screened and was well received by critics. Also in 2009, Einaudi will present a collaborative, and experimental, art/comics/fiction book by Marco Bolognesi and Carlo Lucarelli, one of the most acclaimed contemporary Italian writers.
